What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
When a transponder is questioned it transmits an encoded signal with an eight-digit code. This signal, called SQUAWK Code SQUAWK Code, is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit specific messages to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to notify controllers to changes in weather conditions.
